Service Learning Working Group
The Service Learning Working Group is open to any faculty and staff interested in discussing the theory and practice of community engagement in higher education. It is intended to be an open forum that will aid in the development of best practices among the service learning community at Vanderbilt.
In 2011-12, the group will meet in the Center for Teaching’s workshop space on the third floor of 1114 19th Avenue South. The specific meeting times are listed below.
The format for the discussions is that of an informal colloquium focused around a dimension of service learning pedagogy, a particular teaching challenge, or a case study of teaching practice. Participants in the working group volunteer to lead these discussions, frequently beginning with brief presentations and followed by open dialogue.
If you are interested in participating in the Service Learning Working Group, in leading a discussion, or in simply learning more about the group, please write Joe Bandy, Assistant Director of the Center for Teaching.

Service Learning Working Group
This past Summer, members of Vanderbilt’s Alliance for Community Engagement (ACE) formed subcommittees to better understand community engagement as it is currently practiced at Vanderbilt and other exemplary institutions across the U.S. Over the course of ACE’s October 17th meeting (12-1pm in the Commons Multipurpose Room 235) and the Service Learning Working Group’s meeting on October 28th, there will be a discussion of the results of this work. The October 17th meeting will focus on the reports from ACE subcommittees. The October 28th meeting will have a more open discussion of possible directions for the future of service learning and community engagement at Vanderbilt. All are welcome to participate in both meetings.
