The theme of this first-year writing seminar is the complex connections between
fundamental research in science, science policy and politics, and economic growth. The
central question we will explore is this:
Is there a correlation between scientific research and the health and wealth of
American society, and if the correlation is positive, is it demonstrably causal at some
level and can it be stimulated by scientific and industrial government policies?
The course objective is to introduce you to the economic, political and scientific issues
relevant to the central question of the course, while simultaneously helping you to build
technical skills that meet the standard for college-level expository writing.
