Mentoring Workshop Glossary of Terms
Glossary of Terms:
Backward Design – the process of starting the design process with the end goals in mind and working ‘backward’ towards the present from there. Understanding by Design is a great introduction to the backward design process applied to course design.
Cross-Lab Mentoring Group – Groups that include 2 or 3 mentoring groups from different labs. The cross-lab groups work together during the project design portions of the workshop to share resources and expertise.
Junior Mentor – undergraduate research scientists with at least a year of experience in the laboratory. Often the junior mentors are former interns in the Community of Scholars program. (See Near Peers, below)
Near Peer – The junior mentors are near peers to the interns in that they are close to the same age and experience level. The near peers remember what it is like to be new in the lab and not to know things that have become second nature (invisible) to the senior mentors. The junior mentors are thus a critical part of the learning taking place in the Community of Scholars program.
