Pros
- Engages Audience: Online quizzes are interactive attention grabbers that can focus and garner student interest.
- Works Well for Large Classrooms: There’s really no limit to how many people can take an online quiz and teachers do not have to worry about the logistics of distributing a paper quiz to a large number of people.
- Instant Feedback: Autograding lets students know how they did and can give them the chance to better understand the material.
- Security: Questions can be randomized and timed to discourage cheating an the online quiz itself can require a login or some other security measure.
Cons
- Not all online quizzes are created equal and may only offer some features. For example, not all quizzes are secure and allow for student cheating. Others do not autograde and so on.
- Technological Difficulties: There’s a learning curve to both creating and taking online quizzes and errors and problems still can pop up. They also require that all students have reliable internet access, preferably from a personal device.
- Paper exams give students room to cross out answers and mark up the test as well as give room to work out problems. This can be solved by offering scratch paper.
