New Book Offers a Fierce Critique of Modern Academia

Posted by on Thursday, August 5, 2010 in News.

Andrew Hacker, professor emeritus at Queens College, and Claudia Dreifus from the New York Times have written a provocative new book, Higher Education? How Colleges Are Wasting Our Money and Failing Our Kids and What We Can Do about It.  Written as a jeremiad for higher education, it argues that an over-emphasis on disciplinary research, vocational education, and sports is destroying an older academe focused on the liberal arts and high-quality, engaged teaching.  Sure to be controversial, see a recent interview with the authors in The Atlantic.
