The Center for Teaching (CFT) and the English Language Center (ELC) provide support for international graduate teaching assistants (ITAs) in the form of English language courses and training for teaching in the American classroom. In addition to the opportunity for ITAs to take a variety of language and teaching classes, ITAs also benefit from one-on-one meetings with undergraduate Language Partners and Teaching Partners (formerly known as “student consultants”). The Center for Teaching is looking to hire Teaching Partners to assist ITAs enrolled in the Teaching Practicum course offered by the center. Teaching Partners primarily serve as a resource on Vanderbilt culture in the classroom, providing feedback and assistance for ITAs enrolled in the Teaching Practicum. Teaching Partners must attend a mandatory orientation session at the beginning of the semester, as well as participate in giving feedback during ITA language evaluations.
Duties may include attending campus events, engaging in listening and speaking activities, providing feedback on teaching presentations, and talking about American culture, particularly in the American classroom. Pairs will meet a specified number of hours each week (depending on the need of the ITA, usually 1 – 3 hours/week). The pay is $7.25/hour and the schedule is flexible; pairs set their own meeting times. Students who want to work more hours can work with two ITAs.
