CFT Graduate Teaching Fellow Lily Claiborne Wins TA Award!
At the College of Arts & Science Faculty Meeting on Dec. 7th, 2010, CFT Graduate Teaching Fellow Lily Claiborne received the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award in the College. Here is the commendation read for her by Associate Dean of Graduate Education Russell M. McIntire:
“Each year we recognize two graduate students with proven accomplishments and special promise as teachers. This year the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award is given to a student who was nominated as “the finest teaching assistant we have had in our 33 years of collective departmental memory.” One faculty member says, “She has wisdom beyond her years, mainly because she has approached teaching [itself] as a science.” Student comments range from the typical “[This TA] ‘is da bomb.’” to “[This TA] is ‘always willing to help…challenging you by helping you figure something out without just telling you.’” The award comes with an appropriately inscribed plaque and a check for $1,000. The award for Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant goes this year to a student in the department of Earth and Environmental Science—Lily Lowery Claiborne.”
