GradSTEP Preview: Sessions
Join us next weekend, Saturday January 21st, from 9:30am-2:30pm in Wilson Hall, for a series of free teaching workshops for graduate students, professional students, and post doctoral fellows.
Co-sponsored by the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching and the Graduate Student Council, the Graduate Student Teaching Event for Professional Development (GradSTEP) includes the following 10 sessions:
- PowerPoint Makeover
In this session, you will learn to identity common pitfalls with PowerPoint presentations and how to overcome them. - Course & Syllabus Design
A review of the fundamentals of writing a course description, choosing texts, determining assessment methods, and selecting instructional techniques. - Leading Effective Discussions
This workshop will focus on the theories, practices, and strategies that facilitate classroom discussion. - Tools & Tips for Grading
A conversation about the challenges of grading, plus practical strategies for making grading easier and more efficient. - “Life GPA”: Teaching Beyond the Grade
In this session, you will learn ways of motivating students to realize the value of a general education. - College Writing: Teaching Students How to Write
This session will focus on developing techniques to guide students through the writing process. - Private Universes & Mental Models: The Science of Teaching Science
What does the science of learning have to teach us about teaching science, engineering, and math? - Teaching with Texts
This workshop will generate, present and discuss strategies for incorporating texts and primary documents in classroom pedagogy. - Teaching Portfolios: From the Classroom to the Job Market
A discussion of the purpose of teaching portfolios, their role in the job market, and how to go about creating them. - Interactive Lecturing
This workshop will focus on tools and techniques for engaging students in lectures.
Held in January each year, GradSTEP provides several workshops and discussions on teaching, learning, and professional development issues across the disciplines. All Vanderbilt graduate and professional students, as well as post-doctoral fellows, are invited to attend.
